Fans of Amazon’s The Boys may have noticed a peculiar plot shift in an early season 3 episode. The third segment, titled “Barbary Coast,” revisited the early days of Payback, the super team formerly led by Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) during World War II. Black Noir, a current member of the Seven, was originally a member of this team. In the Noir flashbacks, we witnessed a rare instance in which the mask-wearing individual was not wearing it, and he was conversing freely.

However, Nathan Mitchell, who has worn the Black Noir costume since day one, was not the actor depicted as Noir without a mask. Instead, it was Fritzy-Klevans Destine, recognized for her appearances in Superman & Lois and Batwoman. The reason for this shift, according to showrunner Eric Kripke, is that Mitchell will now play a different role in The Boys season 4 due to the events in the season 3 finale.

Kripke claims he sat down with Mitchell before to the start of the season to deliver the news: “I remember I actually said, ‘OK, so I’m going to say something and your stomach is going to drop, but then I’m going to say something else and you’re going to realize it’s okay.'”

Kripke and the writers determined that the third season of Black Noir would be its last. In the series finale, the supreme returned to Vought HQ to confront Homelander (Antony Starr) and prepare for the fight of his life versus Soldier Boy. Unfortunately for him, Homelander murders Noir when he discovers his teammate concealed a major secret about Soldier Boy from him for years.

A character that is absolutely silent and wearing a black mask can be recast, according to Kripke.

Mitchell will portray a “new figure who wears the Black Noir outfit” in season 4, which will begin production in August, according to Kripke. “It is quite unlikely that we will see Black Noir as a hero again. The individual who wore [the Noir suit] in season three has departed. Next season, though, Nathan will portray an incredibly entertaining and amusing character who wears the costume.”

It’s a bittersweet moment for the supe we’ve come to know as Black Noir, especially after the third season developed the character’s history. He became Noir after being instructed by Stan Edgar to eliminate Soldier Boy during Payback’s Nicaragua operation; however, Soldier Boy sears Noir’s face, causing him to go quiet. All of this is depicted in an animated scene with Noir’s imaginary buddies.

“Young Noir grew up frequenting the Buster Beavers pizza chain. Similar to a Chucky Cheese, “Kripke explains. “He observes the animated figures. They become animated and have extensive interactions with him.” Each cartoon character is also voiced by an actor from the episode 3 Payback flashbacks. Destine voices the animated ram in Black Noir.

“Like everything on the show, it’s an organic descent into hell,” Kripke explains. “We desired Noir in the vein of Dark Knight of the Soul. This is difficult because he does not communicate. We understood we had to enter his mind, and someone suggested that he goes to a cabin. And I said, “He should go to a lodge, but Snow White’s animated creatures should be flying all over him,” with the implication that they’ve always been there. Then someone stated, “Well, it could be a bit cheesy.” How about a Chuck E. Cheese?’ So it simply evolves.”

Kripke views himself as a huge animation nerd. This is why he created The Boys Presents: Diabolical, an anthology series of animated shorts set in the universe of The Boys. He confesses that possibly this is what had animation on his mind during Season 3 for Noir’s buddies.

According to Kripke, it had to be “on par with authentic Disney hand-drawn animation.”

“We collaborated with the remarkable company 6 Point Harness, which created all of the animation for us. But what I love most about it is that it is hinted that these individuals hang out with Noir for the entirety of the series “He proceeds. “If you were to cut into Noir’s point of view, he would be interacting with these animated characters. And that offers me immense satisfaction.”

The actor has spoken openly about how he landed Soldier Boy just as Supernatural was wrapping up. It even included defeating some Hollywood stars.

Eric Kripke described how Jensen Ackles got the part of Soldier Boy in 2021, but now it’s Ackles’ turn to tell his side of the tale. In a recent interview with Men’s Health, he discussed his experience on The Boys and how he got the part of Supe. Soldier Boy was originally intended for an older actor, but when Ackles contacted Kripke to ask his thoughts on a different project, the discussion took an unexpected turn: “I said, ‘So what’s going on over there at The Boys?” We were about to finish watching Supernatural when I realized, ‘You know, I’m going to be jobless.’ I just tossed it out there playfully. ‘Look, dude, if you want to come over to The Boys, I’ll bring you over here no problem,’ he offered right away. I’d be delighted to have you.’ ‘Sign me up!’ I said.

Given that Supernatural was nearing the end of its 15-season run, it’s no surprise that Ackles leaped at the chance to join The Boys! The actor said that Kripke gave him several audition tapes and that he instantly wanted in.

However, Ackles was skeptical that he would even receive the role. While he didn’t say who since he’d be blacklisted, he did say that after hearing who was on the shortlist, he was certain he wasn’t going to get Soldier Boy: I do know that there were certain names that I believe the network was considering. A brief list of names was provided. And when [Kripke] recited a handful of those names to me, I said to myself, ‘Oh, well, there’s no way.’ I don’t stand a chance. Those people are Hollywood stars.’

Fortunately, Jensen Ackles was cast as Soldier Boy, and the rest is history. It makes me wonder who else was up for the position and who made Ackles so concerned that he wouldn’t win it. Maybe one of those actors will appear as a different hero in The Boys Season 4, when it airs?

Meanwhile, Ackles was not the only Supernatural performer to go right into a new project once the show wrapped. Jared Padalecki agreed to play the title character in the Walker revival before the last season of Supernatural had even wrapped (and prior to the COVID shutdowns). Walker launched in SPN’s timeslot the following year, and the third season is already in the works, with prequel series Walker: Independence set to debut this autumn.
