Tom Volf with Monica Bellucci: Art Is Beauty And Soul Elevation

Tom Volf is a filmmaker and photographer. His directing work ranges from shooting for the opera to fashion advertising and institutional films for television transmission and international communication, such as the OECD.  I’d want you to tell me about Tom and what he intends to accomplish with his life.  Tom is a 36-year-old author, director, film and stage – an artist at heart and soul – aspiring to be in the service of Art & Beauty – I guess that’s my life’s mission. And God understands how much beauty our planet needs today more than ever. This is accomplished via the use of movies (“Maria by Callas”), literature, exhibits, and theater (Monica Bellucci). Of course, Maria Callas was a watershed moment in my life. This occurred in 2013 and gave rise to many of the wonderful projects I’ve had the opportunity to work on over the previous several years. Other projects include the immersive exhibition Jam Capsule in Paris, which I curated and constructed based on Flemish painters such as Jan Van Eyck. Again, I’m constantly seeking for methods to uplift spirits and bring beauty and passion into people’s lives.

What does photography mean to you? And how do you train to become a great photographer?

My career as a photographer began in my early twenties, when I began photographing musicians and artists in France, as well as authors. It was a lot of fun for me. And, although I’ve shifted my focus in recent years to directing, cinema, and theater rather than photography, it has always remained a method of expression for me. For example, when I developed the exhibition based on Callas’ letters to Monica Bellucci, I opted to photograph myself for the poster, a black and white image that captured the chemistry between Maria and Monica. I have to admit that I’m quite pleased of this photograph since it embodies the realism and truth that we strive for on stage. To me, photography is a method of peering into someone’s soul and sharing it via a still picture that will last forever. Also, photography is a true art form for me; I only use manual film cameras, for example, because nowadays, with modern technology, anyone can be a photographer, whereas using manual film cameras requires skills, concentration, time, and for me, photography also requires a sense of staging – which blends with my work as a director.

I’ve seen some of your stylish images, but the most of the remainder portray unexplored regions. What interests you about this theme and why do you use it?

This was part of my work in previous years, such as a trip to the North Pole and another to Tibet and Nepal. It was about pure areas and people (or animals near the North Pole), attempting to portray beauty via Nature or Eastern cultures such as Tibet and Nepal, where spirituality is prevalent. To me, nature and spirituality are two sides of the same coin.

What is the most satisfying aspect of your job as a photographer?

The ability to capture something fleeting. A moment, an instant, that has already passed, unless you capture it with photography. Or the fact that employing technique and light, you may display something that you see but others don’t — the concept of revelation, in which a picture discloses something previously unseen.

What exactly is art?

Art is about beauty and spiritual uplift.

Critics overwhelmingly supported this outstanding production and documentary about Maria Callas. What inspired you to come up with this idea?

It began in 2013, when I was living in New York, when I stumbled across recordings of Maria Callas almost “accidentally,” though I believe in fate. When I began to learn more about her life and uncover more of her recordings, I was very moved by both. I thought to myself, “There is an unbelievable tale to be told, with the dichotomy between the lady and the artist, and how one side influenced the other throughout her whole life.” Making “Maria by Callas” took me 5 years and was a difficult yet lovely adventure. I always stated that I ended up creating the picture that I would have liked to see if I had found her! I consider this all part of one big mission that I embarked on, and which takes me to 2023 with her centenary (and a decade after I began my trip with her), aiming to put up a Museum in Paris, as well as participate in the Museum project in Athens.

Was it tough to direct, conduct, and gather all of the material for this documentary?

Extremely challenging since my objective was to produce a film totally from archives, fully in her own words, and because all of the archives were spread all over the globe, it took a long time to recover and compile all of the information without which the film could not have been finished. I was quite fortunate to have gotten the assistance and support of all of her closest friends who are still living, some of whom are also here in Athens, for which I am eternally thankful.

Who are your favorite directors?

Among others, Luchino Visconti, Ernst Lubitsch, and Billy Wilder!

What are some things you would do that you haven’t already?

Oh, so many details! I have a lot of goals that I’d want to accomplish. I’m looking forward to new ventures in both film and theater. I wish to make more documentaries as well as feature films, as well as perform more theatrical plays and direct an opera! I’m hoping to do more projects in Greece, since I’ve had a love affair with the nation since we played with Monica Bellucci at Herod Atticus last September, which was a fantastic experience. I also have projects in France and Italy. So I’m open to a variety of alternatives!

Monica Bellucci ended her relationship with a much younger lover: “We will be friends until the end of our lives.”

The famous Italian actress Monica Bellucci’s romantic connection with the young artist Nicolas Lefebvre took an unexpected turn. The 54-year-old actor and the 36-year-old artist are no longer together. Ms. Bellucci revealed the split in an interview with a French newspaper.

According to galpost.com, the actress claimed that while the couple’s love connection has ended, they intend to remain friends. Ms. Bellucci did not give a reason for the breakup, according to galpost.com.

“Of course, Nicholas and I adore one other. He was a great teacher to me. He is a gifted individual with exceptional artistic ability. Unfortunately, our connection will alter from now on; we will stay friends until the end of our lives,” M. Bellucci said.

This is the Italian actress’s first meaningful relationship after her sad breakup with French actor Vincent Cassel. The young artist’s romantic relationship is thought to have begun in December, when the paparazzi managed to picture the two meeting surreptitiously. There was no mistake about it: the couple kissed on the street and exchanged pleasant feelings.

Bellucci and Lefebvre made their first public appearance together in March, at an event in Madrid. The performance of the duo has piqued the interest of the international media. According to M. Bellucci, the relationship’s secrecy drew her and N. Lefebvre very close. She and her ex-lover shared similar viewpoints and hobbies, including a love of travel.

“I’ve been dating the same person for a long time, and everything is OK.” His job requires him to travel extensively over the world. That’s why he completely understands me and approves of my lifestyle. “I am overjoyed,” M. Bellucci previously stated.

It is only fitting to recall that the actress, regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world, was married twice. Claudio Carlos Basso, an Italian photographer, was Bellucci’s first husband. In the 1990s, the pair married and divorced in 1994. On the shooting of the film “L’appartement,” M. Bellucci met French actor V. Cassel. The actors’ wedding took place in 1999. The couple was the parents of two girls. Elder Deva is an exact replica of her famous mother. M. Bellucci and V. Cassel announced their divorce in August 2013.
