The M division will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022, with a new appearance for the distinctive M emblem. The three famous stripes and the “most powerful word in the world,” as seen on the Concept XM late last year, are receiving a black makeover for future additions to the range. The iX M60 is leading the way, with the production version of the XM to follow in the following months.
Traditionalists, on the other hand, may take solace in the fact that the tri-color insignia is not going away. Existing high-performance versions will retain the blue, purple, and red colors. Only newcomers to the ever-expanding M family will use the black /M. The shape is altering as well, as seen by the M4 CSL, which has a crimson surround to indicate its potency. The iX M60 receives a Titanium Bronze badge shape, which is reserved for the most luxurious M automobiles.
BMW M sales and marketing vice president Timo Resch outlined the plan in an interview with Australian magazine Which Car: “The broad future orientation for fully new vehicles is that we have a black M logo and the old cars, for example, we will not modify.” That’s where you’ll see a black M badge on next-generation vehicles. Only fully new platforms and models will be given a black label.”
The iconic tri-color pattern isn’t going away, but Resch says it may evolve in the future: “When we look into future design, we will continue to play around with these colors, since they are part of BMW’s identity.” They are ours, and you can see them on the racing vehicles. You’ll see some creative ways to use these colors.”
Meanwhile, to commemorate the M division’s half-century anniversary, the historic BMW Motorsport symbol will be available on all M Sport and M vehicles throughout 2022. It was first seen on the M4 CSL, with the M3 Touring, M2, and XM following suit.
