A sedan competing in a drag race against a 911 Turbo S may not make much sense, especially if the Porsche in issue is an earlier 997-generation vehicle. The M5 CS, on the other hand, is no average sedan after BMW worked its magic to increase power and reduce weight from the Competition edition. Carwow came up with the brilliant concept of comparing two distinct ideas on a performance automobile in a straight-line acceleration test.
The M5 CS’s twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine produces 635 horsepower and 750 Newton-meters (553 pound-feet) of torque, which is 105 hp and 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) more than the decade-old 997 Turbo S. BMW’s fast sedan, on the other hand, is still a bit of a pig even after a diet. It weights 1,825 kilograms (4,023 pounds), making it 240 kilograms (529 pounds) more than the coupe from Zuffenhausen.
Both feature automatic gearboxes with launch control that distribute power to all four wheels, but the 911’s flat-six 3.0-liter engine is plainly situated in the rear for greater weight distribution. The Porsche’s 3.8-liter twin-turbo mill is from a time when emissions and noise restrictions were less stringent, so it’s no surprise that it sounds more aggressive than the BMW’s S63 engine with its required gasoline particulate filter.
Throughout the drag race, the two performance machines were neck and neck, but the M5 CS won by a narrow margin. In rolling races from 50 mph (80 km/h) in comfort and sport modes, the BMW’s torque-converter gearbox kicked down far faster than the Porsche’s PDK.
Despite being much heavier, the M5 CS won yet another braking test from 100 mph (161 km/h). The brakes on both vehicles were carbon-ceramic, with Pirelli P Zero tires on the sedan and Bridgestone rubber on the coupe. The gap was significant, but the 911 Turbo S from the 997 generation was withdrawn in 2013, so it’s an old vehicle.
Depending on how you look at it, the fact that the M5 CS was the unambiguous victor is a remarkable accomplishment for a huge and hefty sedan, while some would say that the Porsche is still an amazing weapon if it can keep up with the BMW.
