The BMW i4 M50 is the standout model in the i4 portfolio, with 536 horsepower and a 0-60 mph pace that rivals the M3. However, despite all of that performance and excitement, it will not be the one that buyers purchase. The volume seller will instead be the less costly, longer-range BMW i4 eDrive40. However, this may not be a negative thing since the entry-level model may be superior.
CNET just tested the BMW i4 eDrive40, which seems to be the only i4 you’ll ever need. It’s definitely slower than the M50, due to its single-motor powerplant producing 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Instead of the M50’s M3-like acceleration, the i4 eDrive40 gets 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, which is still hot-hatch quick and enjoyable. It’s also faster than a Tesla Model 3 with a single motor.
Then there’s the issue of range. On paper, the BMW i4 eDrive40 can go around 301 miles on a single 81.5 kWh battery charge. The i4 M50 has a maximum range of roughly 270 miles, but it’s simple to utilize all of that power and soon deplete that amount. It can also charge at 200 kW, which is quicker than the majority of its competitors, including the Polestar 2.
If you can afford the BMW i4 M50, you’ll probably prefer its insane acceleration. However, if you save some money and get a less costly model, you will most likely not be disappointed. With its cheaper price, greater range, less weight, and still enjoyable performance, the i4 eDrive40 is likely the superior option.
