Rolls-Royce Designer Talks About $30 Million Boat Tail Design

Rolls-Royce revealed its second Boat Tail, a roughly $30 million customized automobile constructed for a single buyer, at the 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. But, if it’s the second–and there will be a third–is it really all that unique? But I’m digressing. We were able to discuss the design of the magnificent Rolls-Royce Boat Tail with Rolls-Royce designer Alex Innes, who is head of coachbuilding at Rolls, at the Concorso, which overlooks Italy’s gorgeous Lake Como.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is intriguing since its body is completely distinctive while yet being unmistakably a contemporary Rolls-Royce. It has an intriguing color scheme, which is a kind of brown/mauve-ish color scheme with rose gold highlights throughout the automobile, including the Spirit of Ecstasy.

The same brownish color palette is used inside the automobile, with additional rose gold highlights and mother of pearl embellishments. This car’s owner collects pearls and wanted mother of pearl touches everywhere. They also wanted the vehicle to appear different in various lighting, like a pearl, thus the paint is both pearlescent and metallic.

The primary attraction, though, is the beautiful wooden back terrace, which extends out to give an umbrella, silverware, champagne coolers, serving dishes, and other amenities. You may enjoy a Bond villain picnic by opening the rear of the Boat Tail. It’s both wonderful and ridiculously over-the-top. That pretty much sums up the Rolls-Royce brand. But I’m curious: where do you throw the filthy dishes and forks once the picnic is over? That must be Nigel the Butler’s job to solve.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is more expensive than many homes combined, yet it is the only one in existence. Unless the owner of this automobile is secretly reading this (send me an email if you are!). I have all the questions), and none of us will ever see this item again. So watch this video for the most up-close and personal tour you’ll ever receive.
