Enthusiasts will certainly bypass the i7 in favor of the M4 CSL, which is perhaps the more thrilling of the two vehicles. Of course, these new BMWs appeal to a wide range of market sectors and adhere to the company’s “Power of Choice” approach. It refers to providing a range of drivetrains, as shown at the 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este with a powerful inline-six gasoline engine for the Coupe Sport Lightweight. The fullsize car, on the other hand, depends on a pair of electric motors to accomplish what we like to call “quiet luxury.”
The i7 xDrive60 makes one of its first public appearances in Lake Como in Italy, where it basically resembles the new 7 Series G70. To compete with the current Mercedes S-Class and its EQS electric counterpart, BMW’s all-new flagship has been entirely overhauled inside and out. Because the 7 Series and i7 share the same platform, the two German automakers have chosen distinct methods.
The EQS sits on a different electric chassis from the S-Class, which has gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. As a result, the two Mercedes models have distinct visual identities and don’t even share the same body design, despite the fact that the EV is officially a liftback.
As we steadily convert to EVs, the i7 is a nice old sedan with a more and more conventional electric powertrain. Say what you want about your favorite brand, but few manufacturers are as bold in terms of design these days. There are a few quirks that some of us are still getting accustomed to, but I, for one, like the zero-emissions policy. The luxobarge appears better in real life than on the official BMW photos. Different strokes for different individuals, of course, since design is always subjective.
Few have paid attention to the diversity of styling options available from BMW for its cars. The 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series all have distinct looks, but other competitor manufacturers have been chastised for using the “same sausage, different length” strategy.
Our new group of images from the 2022 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este enables you to familiarize yourself with the i7 as taken by the camera in the real world.
