Japanese and American parts are added to the powerful BMW M3 build.

To make a lethal E46 M3 project, you need Japanese armor, GM LS power, and a Ford rear end.  For a long time, the aftermarket for cars kept a strict separation between different genres and places of origin. Japan’s wheels, American muscle cars, and European cars were never meant to be mixed together, but that’s exactly what happened as progress and performance advancements overshadowed those old, unwritten rules. When Alhue Gayle saw this 2001 BMW M3 with an 8-cylinder GM engine under the hood, he didn’t give a second thought.

He’s either with or against you.

Next, we’ll talk about how this long-term build came about. Gayle bought this car about 12 years ago with the goal of starting a new project with it. A clean title and 98,000 miles on the odometer made some of his friends question his plans. As he says, “Some think I’m crazy for cutting up an already-fine and original E46 M3, but I don’t think it’s worth it unless it’s an original M3 chassis.” Instead of getting to know the new car, it was taken right away to his friend Suppy for a custom roll cage.

A 5.3L LS was put in its place after the inline-6 was cut out to make space for it. The goal was to add a lot of torque to the M3 by using a powerful engine that is well known. It’s cheaper and easier to get parts for an S54 than it is to keep an S54 in top shape. When you need a part, you don’t have to wait a long time for it to come from a dealership. Most parts can be found in stock at an auto chain store near you.

Hurry up and wait for me.

As with any major car surgery, there can be problems that slow things down. For a few years, the car went through a lot of setbacks, and Gayle says that the passion and drive for the project had faded. At the time, Gayle was working on a lot of different projects. After 7 years, the process was done. The car wasn’t even on the to-do list any more. On a whim, the car was brought to Florida, where it and Gayle would start a new life together. “I had the chance to ride shotgun in a turbo LS drift build,” he says. During that ride-along, I knew that natural aspiration was no longer for me. To make room for a new set up, the old one was taken out and replaced with a new one that had CRC ported heads and upgraded valves, a Texas Speed cam and FAST 102mm intake manifold, as well as a GM throttle body. The 1,200cc injectors are fed by three fuel pumps and a filter that sit next to a swirl tank above the Fuel Safe 16-gallon cell.

It’s behind the passenger side headlight bucket, and it’s backed by a pair of TiAL wastegates and a blow-off valve. The Treadstone intercooler is surrounded by custom piping made by UPFAB. UPFAB also made the 3.5-in. downpipe and the complete exhaust system, which ends with four finishers for a factory-like look. Infusion of JDM

The only thing that looks like it came from the factory is the exhaust tips. The rest of the coupe’s exterior has been a lot of work. The Pandem front and rear fenders make the car’s track much bigger, which makes it possible for 19×12.5 Work Meister L1 rear wheels to fit without a hitch. In this case, there will be no tire stretching or weird camber settings, because the 325/30 rear tires have to try to use the car’s current 720 lb-ft of torque metric. The idea of putting JDM wheels on a BMW isn’t new, but most of the time the wheels are based on a certain other lightweight Japanese wheel that’s been used on almost every build in the last few years. The gray face with a shiny lip The Meister L1 is a car that most people don’t even know about. It looks right at home with Medio Grigio paint that was taken from a Ferrari color swatch.

When the M3 was turned into a two-seater, most of the original interior was thrown away long ago when the custom cage was built. This is why the car looks so different now. Besides a Momo flat-bottom steering wheel, a Momo steering wheel, a Momo flat-bottom steering wheel, two Cobra bucket seats with custom Jamaican flag stitching, and a plate that lets the old-school Summit Racing shifter poke into the cabin, you’ll find little else. McLeod’s triple disc clutch and lightweight flywheel are inside the T56 Magnum transmission that’s under the hood. The BMW gets its power from a GM LS, but it gets it to the ground through a Ford 8.8 rear end, which adds to the mix of different types of cars.

The Beginning

Some people say that there’s nothing like the sound and feel of an S54’s naturally aspirated song, which is led by its individual throttle bodies. Gayle, on the other hand, isn’t interested. His goal when he bought his M3 was to build a powerful car that was easier to drive in real life than BMW’s own inline-6. With 715 hp, he’s not done yet “Car: This project isn’t done yet. I have a short list of things I want to do to make this even better. I want a more powerful suspension system, and I’ll also be going up to 1,000HP on the road at the same time.” Alec Coutinho took these pictures.
