BMW will introduce a slew of new performance vehicles in the 50th anniversary year of its renowned M division, including some of the most powerful combustion-engined models the company has ever created as well as the company’s first pure-electric sports cars.
As it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, the M division is on the verge of a transformation that will see it phase out its range of petrol-powered coupés, saloons, and SUVs in favor of high-powered electric alternatives, in accordance with BMW’s vow to scale up EV manufacturing.
From 2025, the company will launch its third-generation EVs on the all-new Neue Klasse platform, which will be completely scalable for deployment in vehicles the size of the 2 Series and X7. Capable of hosting PHEV powertrains and hydrogen fuel cell systems, it will replace the FAAR and CLAR designs now in use throughout BMW’s lineup, but not until both architectures have housed an array of M division sporty cars.
The G87-generation M2, which will take the formula of the renowned Mk1 model and uprate it across the board to cement BMW’s position as a leader in the sports coupé class, is perhaps the most eagerly awaited and high-profile introduction on BMW’s calendar for this year.
M sold almost 160,000 vehicles last year, making it the world’s best-selling performance sub-brand. Here’s what they’re working on.
The M2 Competition
The reimagined Porsche 718 Cayman competitor is set to arrive in showrooms by the end of the year, which means a reveal is just a few months away. The second-generation 2 Series coupé on which it is based is already on the market, with rear-wheel drive as standard in non-performance variants and a top-of-the-line four-wheel-drive M240i packing 369bhp and 369lb ft.
The M240i is powered by BMW’s B58 straight six, while the M2 will employ a variation of the more powerful S58 seen in the bigger M3 and M4. It will give the M2 up to 430bhp in top-tier Competition trim (the only variant marketed in the UK), a 20bhp increase over the previous generation and placing it only 73bhp shy of the M3 and M4. As a consequence, expect the 0-62mph time to be closer to four seconds.
BMW’s dedication to the ‘puristic’ driving experience of its junior M model includes a six-speed manual transmission as standard, a more robust body shell and suspension setup, and the same 50:50 weight distribution as the M240i.
Despite being offered alongside the normal 3 Series estate since its inception, the BMW M3, now in its 36th year of manufacture and sixth generation, has yet to be made available in Touring configuration.
However, the M division is approaching completion of the first-ever M3 Touring, which is expected to come in the coming months and will be among the fastest and most powerful estate vehicles on the market.
Even though test mules are still heavily disguised, it is apparent that the G81 M3 Touring will be distinguished from the saloon simply by its expanded roof.
The vertically oriented grille from the M3 and M4 is carried over, a divergence from the normal Touring’s horizontal face, and flared arches, Competition alloys, and quad-exit exhausts will further distinguish it from other angles.
It will employ the S58 straight-six engine, but, like the M3 saloon, will pack 503bhp in Competition form and, despite roughly 80kg of more weight, is likely to largely equal that car’s performance ratings, with the potential to outperform the V6-powered Audi RS4 Avant. It is likely to come around the same time as BMW unveils a series of improvements for the rest of the 3 Series lineup, preparing the M3 Touring for the firm’s eighth-generation iDrive infotainment platform, which was pioneered by the iX and i4 EVs.
While the M3 receives a more practical estate model, the M4 coupé will be available in a hardcore track-focused incarnation, with improved performance and dynamics — and it might bring back the venerable CSL brand.
The unique M4 range-topper, like the original E9-generation 3.0 CSL (for Coupé Sport Leichtbau, or lightweight), is slated to be extensively upgraded, joining the similarly planned M5 CS in pursuit of quicker lap times and segment-leading performance.
It will continue where the previous-generation M4 GTS left off, with a similarly outrageous aero kit, Alcantara-heavy interior, sportier suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, and lightweight body panels.
A power boost is also planned to separate it from the M4 Competition, perhaps via modifications inspired from the M4 GT3 racer, which produces 582bhp from its 3.0-litre engine.
The XM is just M division’s second customized vehicle, but it is a far cry from the mid-engined M1 supercar that pioneered M’s drive into road cars in the late 1970s.
The XM, like that vehicle, will usher in a dramatic new era for Munich’s performance brand, as the division’s first model to include a plug-in hybrid engine. This will take the shape of a petrol-electric powertrain based on the firm’s historic 4.4-litre V8, as foreshadowed by last year’s Concept XM.
It is anticipated to be the most powerful road vehicle BMW has ever made, with a single electric motor bringing its combined reserves to 740bhp and 734lb ft, and although it is likely to weigh well over two tonnes, it will also be among the quickest. The XM will have one of the greatest engine-off ranges of any BMW PHEV, with a predicted electric range of 50 miles from a battery with a capacity of more than 20kWh.
The real vehicle, which is expected to be presented at the end of this year, will mainly maintain the concept’s outrageous outer style and radical new interior treatment, indicating a stylistic departure for BMW M’s electric automobiles. When the next-generation M5, which will employ a variant of the V8 PHEV powertrain, comes in 2023, it will be more classically designed.
The top-tier M version of the all-new and all-electric i7 saloon will be on sale later this year, with the eighth-generation 7 Series.
The new iX SUV will share the CLAR base and fifth-generation eDrive motor with BMW’s counterpart to the Mercedes-Benz EQS. That means it will be offered in performance-oriented M60 trim, with a twin-motor setup producing 611bhp and 811lb ft for a 0-62mph time of less than four seconds and a peak speed of 155mph – stats that will make the M60 the fastest 7 Series ever made.
The model’s dynamic credentials will be boosted by a wheel-slip limiting feature and M-tuned self-levelling air suspension, while a slew of M-specific displays, noises, and color schemes, as well as a slew of additional equipment as standard, will help set it apart from the normal i7.
A high-powered PHEV might serve as the foundation for the first-ever M7.
BMW has yet to release a full-fat M version of its biggest saloon, but the XM and next-generation M5 are unlikely to be the only cars in the lineup to utilise the new electrified V8, implying that an M7 hybrid with supercar-level power and speed might become a reality.
Such a car would be a direct competitor to Mercedes-impending AMG’s S63 E Performance – also a fast luxury saloon with an electric V8 – and would effectively replace the V12-powered M760i, which will be phased out later this year.
