As Season 3 of The Boys draws to a close, we’re all left wondering, ‘What now?’ Season 3 ended on a startling cliffhanger, leaving us begging for more. This series provided a wide range of abilities all in the same city. It’s a humorous superhero series that may leave you queasy, surprised, worried, or laughing on the floor with each episode.
The characters in this series were hilarious gold, particularly our favourite villain Homelander (Antony Starr), but the next season of The Boys will not be released until late 2023 at the earliest, so what do we watch in the meantime? Many fantastic films, such as Hancock, Code 8, and Suicide Squad, may be used as fillers.
Hancock is a 2008 action/fantasy film starring Will Smith and Jason Bateman ( Ozark ). This film is similar to The Boys’ mix of seriousness and humour. It’s about a slacker named John Hancock who possesses superpowers but has no ambition, love, or concern for life or others. When Ray Embrey encounters the renowned Hancock, he vows to assist him in changing his public image from worthless and dangerous to helpful and heroic.
If you liked The Boys, you’ll like Hancock since it depicts how someone can utilize abilities for good or evil. It also delivers the promised humour after viewing Homelander and Butchers’ one-liners. Hancock’s personality is a hybrid of Butcher’s, Homelander’s, and Hughie’s sensitive spots. This film, like The Boys, will have you laughing and shaking in the same moment, and it is well worth seeing for the twisted finish.
‘Code 8’ (2019)
Robbie Amell stars in Code 8, a sci-fi/thriller that was released in 2019. ( The DUFF ). This film is set in a universe where persons with extraordinary talents face prejudice. Instead of being seen as heroes, these powerful individuals are rejected from professions, incarcerated for no cause, and dreaded by the public. Connor Reed has class 5 electric abilities and hopes to utilize them to earn enough money to aid his ill mother. When he gets mixed up with the wrong crowd, his adorable endeavor becomes dark.
This film is similar to The Boys in that powers were first ostracized and feared by the people; the main difference is that this prejudice does not alter in Code 8. It has a cast of individuals with various talents such as electrical ability, telekinesis, healing abilities, mind reading, and superstrength. This film is devoid of humour, yet it is a fascinating watch as if abilities were never accepted.
‘The Suicide Squad’ (2019)
Suicide Squad is a superhero/fantasy film franchise with a witty comedy element. It debuted in 2016 and will be followed by a sequel in 2021, featuring Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Pete Davidson, and David Harbour from Stranger Things. This film series portrays a gang of supervillains who are coerced by the government into assisting in the defeat of a greater evil.
Like The Boys, the personalities of the group of supervillains shine through the screen as Harley Quin is a flirty, ditsy character longing for love, Deadshot is a serious character that screams Black Noir vibes as he never misses a shot, and Katana is a highly skilled swordswoman giving Queen Maeve characteristics as she is a strong, powerful woman who fights her corner. This film series is based on the concept of a gang of individuals with superpowers battling for a cause while having little good intentions.
Chronicle is a 2012 sci-fi/thriller film featuring a young Michael B. Jordan. It tells the story of three young friends who develop abilities after discovering a secret tunnel in their little town. This film depicts how the lives of innocent, moody youths may end in misery, death, and calamity if superpowers fall into the hands of foolish or greedy people. Throughout the film, it is filmed in “found footage” from a unique perspective.
This film is consistent with everything that may go wrong with superpowers, as shown in The Boys. It demonstrates the evil side of immense power, even in the hands of innocent people. These youngsters, like Cindy and Kenji in The Boys, have telekinetic abilities. Because the general people is ignorant of their newly acquired abilities, they must battle one another rather than attempt to combat their evil intents.
From 1951 until 2020, the Superman film series follows an extraterrestrial creature that attempts to fit into regular everyday life, but if someone needs aid, he’ll take off his work suit and come to the rescue. Many actors have portrayed Superman, including Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Brandon Routh, Henry Cavil, and Tyler Hoechlin ( Teen Wolf ). Superman battles various opponents to defend humanity while while dealing with his everyday troubles.
Homelander’s most conflicting, but complementary, persona is Superman. They each wear an American flag-themed attire, can fly, shoot lasers from their eyes, and have superhuman strength. Homelander is a self-absorbed, malevolent villain, while Superman is a selfless, heroic guy. Homelander’s vulnerability is his intense desire for love and affection, while Superman’s weakness is Kryptonite.
Deadpool is a comedy superhero film series starring Ryan Reynolds that was released in 2016 and 2018. It follows Wade Wilson, a former special forces operator who was tortured and experimented on by an evil doctor in order to generate mutant abilities, culminating in the creation of Deadpool. Wade used his abilities to comically track down the scientist who wrecked his life.
If you liked The Boys, you’ll like this movie series since it has the same cheeky, snarky, and funny comebacks. Superpowers are man-made and unintentional inventions of a strong, demented doctor in both film series. If the jokes and snark in The Boys are your thing, you’ll adore the Deadpool flicks.
The film ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ (2014)
The Guardians of the Galaxy film series debuted in 2014, with a third installment due out in 2023, featuring Chris Pratt as Star-Lord. This is another another comical action/sci-fi series based on Marvel comic superheroes; however, these superheroes began as misfit criminals who realized the universe was in severe peril by mistake. This oddball gang makes an unlikely partnership to preserve the cosmos.
