Doctor Strange 2 : Wanda isn’t really dead (Photos)

The end of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed how the Marvel Cinematic Universe would change as a result. The sequel starring Benedict Cumberbatch ended with a cliffhanger that showed the main sorcerer had gotten the same third eye as Sinister. But before that shocking reveal, fans were left wondering what would happen to Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.

Throughout the movie, the Darkhold changed Wanda Maximoff and gave her a mission to get America Chavez’s powers so she could be with her kids, Tommy and Billy, in another universe. Wanda is defeated, though, when Strange and Chavez work together. Chavez makes the Scarlet Witch realize how much damage she has caused.

When the Scarlet Witch destroyed Wundagore Castle, everyone thought she died in the rubble. Even so, a secret part of the ending of the sequel may show that Wanda is still alive.

Why Wanda isn’t dead, according to an MCU theory

When Wanda destroyed Wundagore Castle, there was a red flash of light, which could mean she lived. Olsen has already hinted that “there are a couple of different ways things could go” with the Scarlet Witch in the future, and she has said that she wants to hear from fans about where they want to see the character go next:

“There are a few different ways this movie could end. Most of all, I want to know what her biggest fans would like to see from her next.

Now, it looks like Olsen’s wish came true, as fans of the MCU have reacted to this important scene in the movie and shared their own theories:

Twitter user @zwollenaar1987 pointed out the red light on the scene and asked everyone if Wanda is really dead:

“She can’t be dead, can she? Even though it looked like it when she brought Mount Wundagore down on herself. I saw a flashing red light.”

Since this hidden detail wasn’t talked about in Multiverse of Madness, it’s possible that it will be in a future project.

Wanda might have made a shield around her to keep the rubble away. This could be the easiest way to explain it, since she used this skill during the Infinity Saga. Even though the Scarlet Witch knew the consequences of what she did in the second movie, Wanda still knows that she needs to live to help her friends fight future threats.

@McR1B69 brought up another possibility, which is that Wanda might have teleported away at the last second:

“I thought Wanda was dead after the building fell on her, but I just saw a small red flash. Could be used to change the story so that she left at the last second or something.”

From Marvel Comics, we know that the Scarlet Witch can teleport. During the storyline of Avengers: Disassembled, Wanda’s future self went back in time to save Scott Lang from the damage she caused.

Wanda from the MCU might be able to teleport, but that hasn’t been proven yet. There was one time in WandaVision that might have shown that she can. During her last fight with Agatha Harkness, Wanda quickly disappeared and then reappeared behind the bad guy. But Wanda might have turned invisible at that moment so she could sneak up behind Agatha and get the upper hand.

Still, this doesn’t mean Wanda couldn’t have teleported away from Wundagore once she realized the castle was gone. No one knows where she went, but she could go back to Sokovia (or what’s left of it) or to her old home, where Doctor Strange found her.

@natalieRROGERS came up with a crazy theory about Agatha Harkness, saying that a Variant of the witch could be the one who saved Wanda:

“WHAT IF AGATHA IS THE SCARLET WITCH IN SOME UNIVERSE AND SHE IS THE ONE WHO HAD THE RED FLASH AT THE END AND SAVED WANDA”

This is a different, but good, example of “It’s Been Agatha All Along.” Since Multiverse of Madness is about Variants and different worlds, wouldn’t it make sense for a good version of Agatha to save Wanda? At this point, it doesn’t seem likely, since America Chavez didn’t open a portal at that time. Still, if this did happen, Agatha: House of Harkness might be the key to understanding how Wanda came back to life.

@jhlvoo used the “no body, no death” rule to determine that Wanda is still alive, giving fans hope that the Scarlet Witch is still alive:

“believe wanda’s dead? doubt it. When the tower fell, there was a red flash, and in movies, if there’s no body, no one dies.”

When a character dies in a superhero movie (or any movie, for that matter) and the body isn’t found, it usually means that person will come back in a big way in a later film.

The head writer of Multiverse of Madness, Michael Waldron, has already said that the Scarlet Witch’s death is “open to interpretation,” meaning that it’s up to the viewer to decide “whether she’s dead or not” after the sequel. Given how popular and important the Scarlet Witch is, it seems likely that Marvel Studios will not kill her off, especially since there are still more stories to tell, like the introduction of the X-Men.

What will the Scarlet Witch do next?

Even though no one knows what will happen with the Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen has said in several interviews that she is willing to come back to the MCU. This is a big clue about what’s going to happen to her and her character in the future, mostly because her willingness to come back makes it easy for the Scarlet Witch to come back at some point.

Wanda is a powerful person, so dying in a crumbling castle isn’t the best way to go out. Even though she was the bad guy in the Doctor Strange sequel, there are still some loose ends to tie up before closing the Scarlet Witch’s chapter. These include her meeting up with White Vision and Clint Barton again, as well as a possible meeting with Magneto.

Wanda’s story could go on in a number of ways, from a possible WandaVision Season 2 to a Scarlet Witch movie on its own. Marvel Studios just needs to find a way to continue her story in a way that fits with what has happened so far in the MCU.
