Thor: Love and Thunder comes out in theaters on July 8. It is the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth one that focuses on Thor. It sounds like fans will finally find out why Thor and Jane broke up.
In the movie’s trailer, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is shocked to see that his ex-girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman) has picked up his hammer Mjolnir and become the hero Mighty Thor in the years since they last saw each other.
“Has it really been three or four years?” Jane asks him.
“Give or take eight years, seven months, and six days,” Thor says. (But who is keeping track?)
Thor had said it was a “mutual dumping” before.

We learned about Thor’s breakup with the astrophysicist in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, when the Asgardian hero denies the story that Jane broke up with him. “She didn’t throw me out, you know,” he tells Loki (Tom Hiddleston). “I got rid of her. It was a dumping on both sides.”
Natalie Portman told The Wall Street Journal in 2016 that, as far as she knew, she was “done” with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She also said at the time, “I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, I don’t know.” “But I think I’m finished. But it was great to take part in.”
Taika Waititi says that as Mighty Thor, Jane gets to be “adventurous, fun, and funny.”
When Taika Waititi came back to write and direct Love and Thunder after making Ragnarok, he tried to get Natalie back so that Jane could play Mighty Thor.
Taika told fans at a panel at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019 that Love and Thunder would be based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book series. In 2019, he told them that Natalie would also be in the movie. “That plot is amazing. It’s full of love, thunder, and emotion, and it’s the first time we’ve seen a female Thor,” he said. “We can only think of one person who could play that part.”
In an interview with Fandango this month, the writer-director said that Jane was “probably not the most exciting version of the female character we want” in the first Thor movies. “I had to talk to her about how I wanted to change that character, just like we changed Thor’s character for Ragnarok. I wanted to give her more freedom to be adventurous, fun, and funny, because Natalie is a really funny person.
Thor: Love and Thunder will look at the relationship between Thor and Jane, as well as why they broke up.
Chris Hemsworth told Total Film in an interview this month that Love and Thunder will explain why his character broke up with Jane off-screen.
“We had a lot of fun exploring that and answering a lot of questions that were left unanswered after they split up in the second film,” he said. “That was pretty vague, so it’s up to you to figure out who dumped who. What did actually happen? Did they talk to each other? How did they feel about how everything turned out? We had a lot of fun exploring all of that.”
