New photos of the Madame Web set show an unexpected place for the Spider-Man spin-off movie

Sony Pictures is building its huge Spider-Man universe at the same time as the MCU. The mysterious new Madame Web movie will be released next year. Madame Web, a Spider-Man spin-off that S.J. Clarkson is directing for Sony’s superhero story, hopes to add a new level of storytelling to this universe with a Spider-Man story that fans will remember.

Dakota Johnson plays Madame Web in her first superhero movie. In her first-ever solo movie, she will use her skills as a clairvoyant to look into the growing spider world. Celeste O’Connor from Ghostbusters: Afterlife and breakout star Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria are also in her supporting cast. This gives Sony’s fifth solo Spider-Man spin-off an exciting level of star power.

The movieing for this new entry just started a few weeks ago, but most of the story details are still being kept secret. Now, the first photos from the set have been released. They show that Madame Web’s first live-action adventure on the big screen will have some interesting twists and an unexpected place to take place.

The first photos from Sony’s Madame Web set

Kevin Slane of the Boston Globe went on Twitter to show the first pictures from Sony Pictures’ Madame Web and talk about the setting.

The caption said that the extras were holding Palm Pilots and that the part of the set that was made to look like New York City had pay phones and newspaper boxes. BeyoncĂ©’s first solo album, Dangerously in Love, came out on June 20, 2003, and a billboard for it was also seen.

This means that at least some of Madame Web will take place in the early 2000s, which is when Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man trilogy came out:

“Palm Pilots with a new “3G speed”? Every corner has pay phones and newspaper boxes? A poster for the first album by BeyoncĂ©? This week, Sony-upcoming Marvel’s superhero movie “Madame Web” turned Boston into New York City in the early 2000s.

What time does Madame Web happen?

So far, all of Sony’s Spider-Man movies have been set in the present, between Tom Hardy’s Venom movies and Jared Leto’s Morbius movies. All signs point to Kraven the Hunter doing the same thing, which makes the news from Madame Web even stranger.

Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has brought Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy back into the spotlight, there’s a good chance that Madame Web could go back to this time and place. It’s still not clear how much the two stories are connected, but these images show that they take place in New York City in the early 21st century, so the chance seems to be there.

There probably won’t be more information about when and where Madame Web takes place in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe for a while, but the idea of a trip back in time is still exciting.
