Massachusetts will get to see another movie about a superhero.
Massachusetts is about to get another Marvel superhero movie. “Madame Web,” a spin-off of “Spider-Man” starring “Fifty Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson, will start filming in the Boston area this month.
A source familiar with the production said that filming for “Madame Web,” which is being made under the working title “Claire,” will start on July 11 and go on until September.
The Patriot Ledger said that “Madame Web” will film scenes in the Hangout, a 33,000-square-foot former fighter-jet hangar that has been used in recent blockbusters like “Free Guy” and “Don’t Look Up” and other movies shot in Massachusetts like “Patriots Day,” “Stronger,” and “Ghostbusters.”
“Madame Web” is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. This universe works with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has movies like “Venom,” “Morbius,” and “Kraven the Hunter,” which is coming out soon. Sony and Marvel Studios worked together on the recent “Spider-Man” trilogy with Tom Holland as the web-slinger, but Sony is the only company that makes the other movies listed above.
Johnson will play the title character, Madame Web. In the Spider-Man comics, Madame Web was a blind, psychic woman who lived in a complex system that looked like a spider web to support her life. According to Deadline, “Madame Web” will also feature Emma Roberts (“We’re the Millers”), Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria”), Celeste O’Connor (“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”), Isabela Merced (“Transformers: The Last Knight”), and Tahar Rahim (“The Mauritanian”).
Kendall Cooper Casting put up a casting call for “Claire” at the beginning of June. The company is looking for Boston-area extras “of all races, ages, genders, and sizes.”
Residents of the Boston area who want to be extras must fill out a full application that includes two recent headshots and be able to work 12+ hours over one to two days.
The casting company is also looking for cars from 2003 or before to use in the movie. Michael Indelicato, a local film worker who works mostly as a driver, asked on Facebook in June to rent a 2000-2003 Dodge Viper for $1,000 a day “plus a brand new set of tires” for use in the movie.
