THE MARVEL TELEVISION UNIVERSE is vital to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet the series themselves live as isolated islands. After the debut of many programs, only Loki’s multiverse romp has been confirmed for Season 2. Single-season miniseries may become the norm rather than the exception. This precedent, however, may be overturned owing to a tweet promoting Moon Knight’s imminent conclusion. Here’s what the show’s future may hold.
Twitter user @Kellie Dixon was quick to get a snapshot of two messages from the official Marvel Studios Twitter account: one previewing the series finale and the other the season finale.
Either of those labels would be a significant disclosure, since Marvel has taken extra care not to indicate whether their series are standalones until they have concluded. The closing of WandaVision made it plain that we wouldn’t be returning to Westview (at least not until Agatha Harkness’ spinoff series), while Loki finished with a giant Season 2 rubberstamp.
But what does the removal of “series” and replacement with “season” signify for Moon Knight? It might imply that the series would end definitively, but the initial tweet was a premature reveal, thus the word “season finale” was chosen instead to provide plausible deniability in the lead-up to the last episode.
The more interesting interpretation, on the other hand, is exactly the opposite: Perhaps there will be more Moon Knight in the future, thus the incorrect initial tweet was removed.
Season 2 of Moon Knight
Is one episode sufficient to conclude Steven and Marc’s story?
This was certainly not something Marvel wanted us to see and talk about in the days leading up to the Moon Knight finale. However, the series has created an epic, multi-layered narrative that is so complex that it’s impossible to see everything being tied up in a single episode. Normally, it would be assumed that Marc Spector/Steven Grant will feature in a future film, similar to how Wanda’s tale from WandaVision would be extended in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
However, Moon Knight’s tale is so self-contained that it seems like it could only be continued in the same TV format. Can we anticipate another post-credits renewal like Loki, or will the fate of Moon Knight be determined by audience reaction? Regardless, there isn’t a definitive nail in the coffin yet.
