Is there a famous DCEU character in the sequel who isn’t a member of the Shazam Family?
Naturally, when it comes to future DC films featuring known characters, The Flash has been the buzz of the town, especially considering Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will reprise their roles as Batman. Shazam!, on the other hand, seems to be the case. Fury of the Gods might possibly include a returning DCEU figure. Rachel Zegler, the first newcomer to the Shazam! sequel, may have hinted that we’ll see Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman again.
Rachel Zegler didn’t explicitly state that Wonder Woman would appear in Shazam! In reaction to reports that the Amazonian warrior may appear in the DC film Fury of the Gods, the actress told Empire Magazine (via Fandom):
I’m not going to reveal much, but we didn’t meet for the first time when shooting Snow White. Rachel Zegler is referring to Disney’s planned live-action rendition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, in which she will portray the title character and Gal Gadot will play the Evil Queen. Last year, Zegler made her cinematic debut in Steven Spielberg’s version of West Side Story, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods is her next project. So, unless Zegler is talking to her and Gadot meeting in an intimate context, it seems that Zegler is implying that Wonder Woman will appear in Fury of the Gods… without really offering 100% confirmation.
While Wonder Woman and Shazam aren’t as close as Batman and Superman or the Flash and Green Lantern, they do share a lot of comic book history from their time on the Justice League and Justice Society. Plus, the original Shazam! film had a Superman appearance (although not portrayed by Henry Cavill), so it’s not like Fury of the Gods pulling this off would be a strange decision. In fact, considering their relationship to the Olympian Gods, some of whom the Shazam Family members take their strength from in superhero form, I’d say Wonder Woman’s appearance makes even more sense.
It’s unlikely that we’ll find out whether Shazam! Until the film is released, Fury of the Gods contains Wonder Woman, so we know it’s worth keeping a look out for her. Although we last saw Gal Gadot’s version of the Themysciran princess in Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020, her most recent appearance in the DCEU was in Justice League (whatever version you want), when she faced Steppenwolf and his Paradeom army with Superman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. Gadot has already been cast in Wonder Woman 3, which will be written and directed by Patty Jenkins.
In the meanwhile, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released on December 16th, and will feature Helen Mirren’s Hespera and Lucy Liu’s Kalypso confronting at least two daughters of Atlas. Although director David F. Sandberg had some fun yesterday with the bogus casting announcement of Zegler portraying the anthropomorphic tiger Tawky Tawny, there’s still no indication on the name of Zegler’s role other that she’s also one of Atlas’ daughters.
