The man who sold his skin

It’s a heartwarming movie called The Man Who Sold His Skin. It tells the story of Sam, a Syrian who fled the civil war and took refuge in Lebanon. To get the visa and leave for Europe with the woman who makes him fall in love, he will do everything he can. When he does this, he agrees to get his back tattooed by an artist who is very sulphurous. Over time, he will turn Sam into a piece of art. At the cost of his freedom. For Yahya Mahayni, who played the role, it was a very important one. He was named Best Actor at this year’s Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti section.

Film based on real-life story

The Man Who Sold His Skin was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2021, making it the first Tunisian film to compete in this category. It is partly based on a true story. It is that of Tim Steiner, a Swiss man who has a tattoo on his back made by the Belgian artist Wim Delvoye. It shows a Virgin with a skull on top of her head. After agreeing to sell his work for 150,000 euros in 2008, he agreed to be a part of three annual exhibitions as a piece of art and to be dismembered after he died. When Kaouther Ben Hania saw the tattoo at an art show, he was inspired by the story and decided to make a movie based on it. He entrusted World to help him find the story behind the tattoo.
